A background to will writing www.guardian.co.uk - December 2008
In our changing society, with increasingly complex domestic and financial circumstances, more people than ever could benefit from making a will. Yet over two-thirds of adults in England and Wales do not have one. Here's why they should.
"When people do remember charities in their will, residual bequests [the residue of the estate] tend to be much more valuable than pecuniary bequests [a set amount of money]. Due to the decreasing value of property and assets [in the recession], residual legacies will not be worth as much as they have been and so legacy income is likely to fall over the next couple of years."
